Beacon Marina Ipswich Review (2026): Costs, Facilities & Liveaboard Guide

Looking for a marina on the East Coast of England? We spent a month living aboard our 44ft Kelly Peterson at Beacon Marina in Ipswich. Here's what we paid, what we loved, and whether we'd stay again.

⭐ Overall Rating: 9.5/10
If you're looking for a clean, friendly, well-connected marina on the East Coast, Beacon Marina is one of the nicest we've stayed in. Excellent facilities, great transport links, plenty of liveaboards and a beautiful setting make it an easy marina to recommend.
The only real downside? The price.

Why We Chose Beacon Marina
Originally, we weren't planning to spend long in a marina. We'd been enjoying life at anchor, where everything feels quieter, more private and a little more adventurous. However, we had several family birthdays coming up, needed good transport links and wanted to tackle a few maintenance jobs before continuing our journey. A rolling monthly berth at Beacon Marina gave us the flexibility we needed without committing to a full year.
What We Paid
Our monthly rolling berth cost: £839 per month
For anyone staying longer, it's worth asking the marina about annual rates and any seasonal offers that may be available.
During our stay, Beacon Marina was also running a summer lifting promotion with 20% off until 31 August 2026.
The prices quoted to us were:
Lift out: £353.38
Pressure wash: £102.02
Storage ashore: £9.44 per day (up to 14 days on the summer offer)
Relaunch: £353.38
We'll only be staying ashore for a short time while replacing our anodes before getting Silva Nova back in the water as quickly as possible.

Facilities
One thing Beacon Marina does exceptionally well is its facilities.
There are three shower blocks, all of which we found clean and well maintained throughout our stay.
There are also two laundry rooms.
Laundry currently costs:
Washing: £3.50
Drying: £3.50
The washing machines are large enough to fit plenty in, although we found they weren't the most powerful. Living aboard, we've discovered that boiling white towels and bedding every now and then helps keep everything feeling fresh.
Fresh water is available on every pontoon, and there are plenty of bins and recycling points spread around the marina.
Living Aboard at Beacon Marina
This is where Beacon Marina really stands out. There are clearly lots of people living aboard here, and the marina feels genuinely welcoming rather than merely tolerant of liveaboards.
The marina also makes a real effort to bring people together and build a community. They organise residents' BBQs and regular coffee mornings, and they even come with free food and drinks! 🥰 It's such a simple thing, but it makes a big difference when you're living aboard and can otherwise spend a lot of time in your own little bubble.
Working remotely has been easy. We mostly use Starlink, but the marina Wi-Fi has worked well whenever we've needed it. If you're working from your boat, you might also find our guide to working remotely from a boat useful.
Post can be delivered directly to the marina, making day-to-day life much easier if you're living aboard full-time.
For pet owners, Beacon Marina is fantastic. There are plenty of dogs around, a secure fenced exercise area, dog waste bins and lots of green space nearby. Luna has enjoyed being able to get ashore too... although she did somehow manage to come home looking like a drowned rat one afternoon! We still have absolutely no idea how she got into the water, but thankfully she was completely fine.
Location
Location is one of Beacon Marina's biggest strengths. There are several restaurants and bars lining the waterfront, creating a lovely atmosphere without the marina feeling noisy.
Ipswich town centre is around a 20-minute walk away, while the railway station is a similar distance and provides direct services to London.
Although we no longer own a car, having several large car parks nearby has been incredibly useful whenever we've rented one or had family visiting. The nearest car hire office is also around a 20-minute walk from the marina.
Security
Beacon Marina feels very secure. Access to the pontoons is controlled by locked gates, there are additional gates for vehicle access, and we regularly saw security staff patrolling the marina during our stay. It's the sort of place where you feel comfortable leaving the boat while exploring ashore.

What We Didn't Love
Honestly, there isn't much. The biggest downside is simply the cost. At £839 per month, it's a significant expense and one of the largest items in any liveaboard budget.
Our only other minor frustration happened on arrival, when we were initially allocated the wrong berth before being moved shortly afterwards. Another visitor experienced the same issue while we were there. If you're arriving through the lock, we'd recommend letting the marina know exactly how long you expect to stay so they can allocate the most suitable berth from the start.
Would We Stay Again?
Without hesitation. Beacon Marina has been one of our favourite marinas so far.
The combination of excellent facilities, welcoming staff, brilliant transport links and a genuine liveaboard community makes it somewhere we'd happily return to, especially with family living nearby. If we needed somewhere to spend the winter on the East Coast, Beacon Marina would certainly be high on our shortlist.
Final Thoughts
Before arriving, I worried that moving into a marina would mean giving up the freedom we'd been enjoying at anchor. Instead, it's reminded us that marina life has its own appeal. Sometimes it's nice to have a hot shower a short walk away, somewhere to collect your post, friendly neighbours to chat to and a waterfront lined with cafés and restaurants after a day's work.
Beacon Marina isn't cheap, but for us it offered excellent value. We'd happily stay here again and would confidently recommend it to anyone looking for a well-run, liveaboard-friendly marina on the East Coast.
