Thinking about moving onto a boat in the UK? Whether you're looking at canals or coastal sailing, the reality is this: There’s a lot more to it than just “buy a boat and go”.

When we moved onto our 44ft sailboat, we realised very quickly how many small (but important) things we hadn’t fully thought through. This is the checklist we wish we had before moving aboard — the things that actually make day-to-day life work.

⚓ Quick Liveaboard Checklist

If you’re short on time, here’s your high-level checklist:

✔ Insurance sorted

✔ Fire safety + CO alarms installed

✔ Moisture control system in place

✔ Low-power galley setup

✔ Solar + electrical tools ready

✔ Internet solution installed

✔ Storage optimised

✔ Pet setup (if applicable)

📥 Want the full checklist?

We’ve put this into a simple, printable version you can actually use when planning your move onboard.

1. Admin & Safety (Start Here First)

This is your foundation. Skip this, and you risk fines, invalid insurance—or worse.

✔ BSS Certification (Inland & Marinas)

If you’re using UK canals or rivers, this is mandatory. Many marinas will also require it—even for coastal boats.

👉 Always confirm requirements with your marina before committing.

✔ Specialist Liveaboard Insurance

Standard leisure policies often don’t cover full-time living.

👉 Look for:

  • Liveaboard-specific cover

  • Contents insurance

  • Liability protection

✔ Fire Safety Kit (Non-Negotiable)

At minimum:

  • Fire blanket

  • Multiple extinguishers (correct type + serviced)

✔ Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarms

Essential if you’re using:

  • Gas

  • Diesel heaters

  • Solid fuel stoves

👉 This is one of the most overlooked (and dangerous) gaps.

✔ Dehumidifier / Moisture Control

UK boat life = condensation.

Without this, you’ll get:

  • Damp bedding

  • Mould

  • Damaged electronics

✔ Mail Forwarding Address

You’ll need a permanent address for:

  • Banking

  • Insurance

  • Official documents

Set this up before moving aboard.

2. The Power-Smart Galley (Designed for 12V Living)

Your kitchen runs on your electrical system—so every watt matters.

✔ Low-Watt Kettle (Essential Upgrade)

Most kettles (3000W) will instantly trip your inverter.

Why it matters: Keeps your system stable and avoids power shutdowns.

✔ Omnia Stovetop Oven

Bake and roast without needing shore power or draining batteries.

✔ Smart Storage Solutions

Space is your most limited resource.

Best upgrades:

  • Hanging veg nets

  • Magnetic knife strips

✔ Collapsible Everything

Buckets, bowls, strainers—if it folds, it belongs on a boat.

✔ Eco-Safe Cleaning Products

Important if your grey water goes overboard.

3. Technical & DIY Toolkit (Your Lifeline Onboard)

If something breaks—you’re the engineer.

✔ Digital Multimeter

Your go-to tool for diagnosing electrical issues.

Why it matters:Lets you identify faults before they become dangerous.

✔ Solar Monitoring Setup

We run a 780W system—monitoring it is essential.

✔ Internet Setup (Starlink or 5G Router)

If you work remotely, this is critical infrastructure—not a luxury.

✔ Crimp Tool & Heat Shrink Kit

For proper marine-grade wiring repairs.

👉 Avoid temporary fixes—they fail when you least expect it.

✔ Toolbox Essentials

  • WD-40 Specialist (marine-safe)

  • Spare fuses

  • Connectors

4. The “Boat Cat” Starter Kit 🐈

Yes—you can absolutely have a cat onboard.

✔ Escape-Proof Harness

Safe deck time without stress.

✔ Filtered Water Fountain

Improves taste and encourages hydration.

✔ High-Value Training Treats

Essential for training and building boundaries onboard.

✔ Non-Slip Feeding Mat

Prevents bowls sliding in wake or ferry wash.

✔ The “Luna Setup”

  • Vertical scratching pads

  • Dedicated nap spot

👉 Creates a stable, predictable environment.

5. Lessons We Learned the Hard Way

If we did this again, we’d prioritise these immediately:

  • Condensation is worse than you think

    Solve moisture early

  • Power limits shape your entire lifestyle

    → Every appliance decision matters

  • You will constantly need tools

    → Don’t under-pack

  • Storage = sanity

→ Small upgrades make a huge difference

Final Thoughts: Is Liveaboard Life Worth It?

It’s not always easy—but it is worth it.

Once your systems are dialled in, you gain:

  • Freedom

  • Simplicity

  • A completely different pace of life

Start with safety. Build your systems properly.Everything else gets easier from there.
